How to select a Quality Local Architect
ARCHITECTS - HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT ONE
The selection of the right Architect can be a very valuable part of the entire building process, particularly when it involves the design of a new home or adding an extension or addition. Your home is a personal asset and to ensure that you get the home that you desire, it is important that you choose the right architect for your needs. Here are a few tips to help you do so.
WHAT IS IT EXACTLY ARCHITECTS DO?
Your Architect will advise you on all parts of the building process including:
• Architectural design and planning
• Organization of other consultants required for a complete design
• Assisting in selecting the correct site for the building
• carrying out feasibility studies and managing the budget
• managing the building process and team
• designing the interior of the building
• designing the landscaping
HOW TO SELECT THE ARCHITECT THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU
There are several things to think about when choosing your Architect. Firstly and perhaps most importantly, you must be comfortable with the Architect you choose. It is critical that they share your vision and have a total understanding of what it is that you want to achieve with the building. Be wary of Architects who are concerned with “owning the idea” or who attempt to imposing a design on you because it is fashionable or something that they like.
You must be comfortable and able to communicate with your architect. You need to be able to describe exactly what your vision for your home is and how you plan to use it. You also need to be specific about the activities or spaces that need to be accommodated in the design, what quality materials, fittings and finishes you require, and exactly what your budget is.
You should research the Architects previous projects to make sure you like the style and features the Architect has previously designed. It is also good to talk to previous clients of the Architect to get their opinion on the performance of a particular Architect. Ask questions such as:
• How did you find the Architect to work with?
• Did the Architect listen to you and design to your brief?
• Did the Architect design to your budget?
• Did the Architect communicate well throughout the process?
• Was the Architect willing to assist with any design related problems during construction?
• Did the Architect provide additional construction details if required by the builder?
• Did the Architect complete the design within the required time frame?
• Were there any other problems I should know about?
If you think you will require your architect to undertake additional activities apart from the building design (such as feasibility studies, site selection, budget planning or project management) it is best to discuss this up front and obtain a price for them to do this for you.
The cost for an Architect to complete the design should be approximately two to three percent of the total cost of the home. A quality architect should be able to draw up the right plans for you even if you are on a limited budget but it is a good idea to talk to your architect first to ensure that they are comfortable with working at your budget level. Neither you or your Architect will want any surprises with relation to you budget.
